Nominations for the inaugural Excellence in Tobacco Control Awards for Wales are now being invited by public health charity ASH Wales.

The new Awards will recognise and celebrate the achievements being made by creative and innovative initiatives in the areas of tobacco prevention and cessation, and will showcase the best examples of excellence in tobacco control throughout Wales.

The Awards are open to groups or organisations, and are divided into six categories: NHS (including Health Boards); Statutory and Local Authorities; Organisations Working With and For Young People (Including Youth-led Organisations and Schools); Voluntary Sector; Private Sector; and Academic and Research Organisations.

All entries must be received by 15th June 2011. So if you know of an organisation/group involved in a creative initiative to tackle tobacco harm or help people to quit smoking, enter now.

Tanya Buchanan, Chief Executive of ASH Wales, commented:

"I am delighted to be inviting nominations for the Awards from organisations and groups working across the sector. I know from our stakeholders, partners, and colleagues that there is a great deal of excellent work being undertaken throughout Wales in the area of tobacco control, and sometimes we don’t have the time to sit back and reflect on just what we have achieved as a small nation to improve public health in Wales.

"The public health agenda has progressed significantly over the last few years and I want to acknowledge the good work being done throughout Wales."

The Awards of Excellence will be announced in November and overall winners will be presented with their Awards at the symposium of the Wales Tobacco or Health Network.
