The smoking of tobacco in waterpipes, also known as shisha or hookah, is not new. Shisha dates back at least 500 years - originating in the Middle East regions of the world. However, in recent years it is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, especially amongst young people across all ethnic groups, where its health risks are not well known. Current evidence suggests shisha smoking is not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes. It is linked to the same serious and life-threatening diseases as cigarette smoking.

This course will provide you with up to date and accurate information on shisha, giving you the confidence to educate people on the associated health risks, to open up discussion and support people to make informed choices.

Learning Outcomes

  • What shisha is
  • How shisha works
  • Where shisha has come from
  • Who uses shisha
  • What the risks are
  • How to challenge shisha myths
  • Where to signpost people for further support to stop smoking

I learnt about Shisha as I had no idea about it before. I plan to run sessions to give young people information on smoking.
